Just discussing bed bugs is enough to make you itch.  The paranoid feelings that come along with suspecting the creatures is very common especially after you hear that you may have been exposed.   Being alert and knowing for sure is half the battle of preventing bigger infestations.  This is very important because even small infestations spread very fast, not only in your residence but the people that visit or come into your life.

First and foremost, whether you think you have been exposed or not, mattress covers are a good idea.   Just note, the best covers are the full vinyl covers that zipper completely over the entire mattress.   You should cover both mattress and box spring.   I find it ironic that hotels are not taking this precaution.  I believe it’s because if they did, they would be admitting to a problem.  The shocker here, it is a problem!  In the event of an exposure, a cover will save your mattress from being infested and there is a ton of value to this.   Many stores like Walmart, Big Lots, and others offer inexpensive full covers and are a great investment even if you have never been exposed.

If you have been exposed but don’t see or feel any immediate signs, the bed frame leg bowl traps are a good idea.   These are not designed to eliminate bed bugs.  The only real value they offer are a way of determining if you have them.   Keep in mind that bed bugs feast typically while the host (you) are sleeping.   Note, that if you are sleeping on a couch, that is another issue.   If you sleep on a bed only though, the traps will work in determining a bed bug presence.

The bowl traps have two chamber for very good reason.   First, they must be placed under all legs of bed frame.   If a bug is found in the outer chamber, it would mean they are probably nested beyond your bed and are climbing up the frames.    If they are found in the inner chamber, it means that they are most likely nested within your bed or frame and are climbing down to travel.    When using these bowls, keep in mind the purpose described above.   This only works if you eliminate other methods of travel up and down your bed.   This means, if you have a bed covering that drapes over and touches the floor, it will not be effective.   Having other things touch your bed, like the bed against wall or touching a night stand will also cause potential failure.

Duct tape is another way of locating bed bugs if they are suspected.   The best thing to do is to get a wide tape.    You can use this in several places.   Again, it is not a remedy of eliminating them, but a good way to give you peace that they are not there or how they may be traveling if existing in your home.   Take duct tape and put the sticky side up across each and every door way.   Obviously you will have to tape it down on the edges.   It is a bit annoying, but you would have to step over the tape while it is in place.   The bugs will get stuck to the tape.    If they are found, you typically can see what direction they are coming from which will hint to where they may or may not be.   Use can also do this around a mattress or box spring.

If you want to be absolutely sure, the very best way is a K9 detection service.   Dogs are trained to sniff bed bugs exclusively.   There are several types of services here, so you need to use caution.   Some dogs will sniff live or dead bugs.   These tend to be the cheaper of services.   I advise against this simply because in some cases you may have been exposed and have brought home a dead bed bug of which is no harm.   Live bed bugs are the problem and that is where you need to focus.   I use a service called NIPit.   They only detect live bed bugs.   You can find them at:  www.nipitbedbugdog.com and please let them know you were referred by Archangel Extermination.   They will give you a certification that your home is clear and will give you peace of mind.
